Spire Motorsports Enjoy Illinois 300 Race Report 2026

Carson Hocevar's eighth-place effort in Sunday's Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Ill., vaulted the Spire Motorsports driver to ninth in The Chase standings with eight races remaining in the 2026 season. Michael McDowell picked up his 17th top-20 finish of the year, while a late-race incident relegated Daniel Suárez to a 29th-place finish. After two trying weeks to start The Chase, Suárez sits 16th in the standings, while McDowell is 20th.

Hocevar, driver of the No. 77 Spectrum Chevrolet, qualified sixth and was running within the top five when he was forced to return to pit road during the Lap-200 caution to tighten a wheel. Despite restarting 30th on Lap 206, the Portage, Mich., native navigated several multi-car incidents to collect his 10th top-10 finish of the season. McDowell, driver of the No. 71 Delaware Life Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, began the race in 29th and sustained damage during an incident just 20 laps into the event. The team lost a lap to the leaders as they continued to make repairs and avoided additional trouble until the end of Stage 2 when McDowell rejoined the lead lap. A series of cautions late in the race allowed the No. 71 to push forward, advancing to the 20th position ahead of the checkered flag. Suárez endured a challenging day in the second event of The Chase, battling through multiple incidents and handling issues throughout the entirety of the race. The Freeway Insurance driver sustained cosmetic damage to his No. 7 Chevrolet in the early incidents, while the team worked to make repairs and improve the balance. On Lap 229, Suárez was involved in another incident that left his oil cooler damaged beyond repair, ending his day.

Up next for the NASCAR Cup Series is a return to Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 19. The Bass Pro Shops Night Race will be broadcast live on USA beginning at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The 29th of 36 points-paying races on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule, and the third race of The Chase, will be broadcast live on the Performance Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.

“It was one of those days where it felt like we were fighting from the very beginning. We had multiple incidents, damage, balance issues and a brake problem, so there was always something we were trying to overcome. The guys never gave up and kept working on the car, and we were able to fight our way forward, but it was just a really difficult day. Unfortunately, that last incident ended our race. I’m proud of this team for how hard they fought and never gave up.”

“We had such a hectic day here at World Wide Technology Raceway. We got some pretty significant damage early on our Delaware Life Chevrolet and spent the first two stages working on those repairs, managing our race, and riding around one lap down. Our Spire Motorsports guys did everything they could to play the strategy and the maximize equipment to salvage a top 20, so we have a lot to be proud of. We missed it a bit this weekend in qualifying, but to finish the race where we did is a testimony to the effort and attitude of this No. 71 team.” 

““Every time there was a wreck or it got chaotic, we were having to make up track position. I didn’t get to see a lot of the chaos, but I’m glad it helped us, obviously. We had to come from the back twice. Our No. 77 Spectrum Chevrolet was fast, so luckily, we could do that and we could just move around. I was worried that we were just going to run out of laps, but people just kept wrecking, so it made our lives a little easier.”
