Spire Motorsports Anduril 250 Race Report 2026
By PGORDON
All three Spire Motorsports drivers started inside the top-10 Sunday's 75-lap NASCAR Cup Series' street race at Naval Base Coronado. Michael McDowell earned the organization's 15th top-10 finish of the 2026 season and Daniel Suárez finished 13th, while Carson Hocevar clocked a 19th-place effort after leading four laps late in the Final Stage. Suárez and Hocevar remain eighth and ninth, respectfully, in the driver championship point standings. McDowell leaves San Diego in the 21st position.
McDowell earned his fourth top 10 of the year after battling rear lateral security and minimal splitter damage on the No. 71 Defense Unicorns Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The Glendale, Ariz., native narrowly avoided a major wreck that collected the leaders on Lap 32 and persevered for a 10th-place finish. Suárez earned his best road course start of the year (sixth) in the No. 7 Freeway Insurance Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in Saturday's qualifying session and drove to a 13th-place finish in the Anduril 250 for his 10th top 15 of the season. The Monterrey, Mexico native overcame an early pit road penalty and front end damage to run inside the top 10 in the final stage before a pit stop shuffled him back in the running order. Hocevar earned a career-best qualifying effort on a road course with a second-place showing in the No. 77 Spectrum Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The Portage, Mich., native retained top-10 track position most of the afternoon and led twice for four laps. With 12 laps remaining in the race, Hocevar was turned around by a competitor while leading and ultimately crossed the finish line in 19th.
Next Sunday, June 28, the NASCAR Cup Series visits Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway for the fourth and final road-course event of the season. The 110-lap race will be broadcast live on Prime beginning at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The 18th of 36 points-paying races on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule will be broadcast live on the Performance Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.
“Overall, I think we had a much better No. 7 Freeway Insurance Chevrolet than the 13th-place finish shows. We had to overcome the pass-through penalty early, and then the damage from the incident in Stage 2 made things more difficult for the rest of the day. Even so, the team did a great job keeping us in the fight, and we were able to rebound and score stage points. From there, we worked our way back into contention late in the race and salvaged a solid finish. It’s not the result we fully wanted, but there’s a lot we can build on with the speed we had.”
“When that wreck happened up front with Shane (Van Gisbergen), Connor (Zilisch) and Austin (Hill), we got into that and got a lot of damage on our No. 71 Defense Unicorns Chevrolet. We lost a lot of track position from that, but we were able to rebound there at the end. Just proud of the effort from this No. 71 team. I’m bummed out. A top 10 is not what we came here for, we were hoping for more. But it could have been disastrous, so I’m glad we got back into the top 10 to carry the momentum to Sonoma next weekend.”
“We had a really good Spectrum Chevy this weekend, and thought we played the strategy perfect to contend for the win. Thanks to all the No. 77 guys for all their hard work.”
